Roadways are what binds communities together!

From assessment to action: BKF’s integrated approach to pavement rehabilitation.

Are your streets in need of more than just a quick fix? BKF understands that pavement management isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. We’re dedicated to offering comprehensive rehabilitation strategies tailored to each community’s unique needs.

Our Pavement Rehabilitation program offers a pathway to upgraded, well-maintained streets, sidewalks, bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.

Our Approach: When it comes to pavement management, thorough investigation is the key. BKF’s strategy is all about tailoring to our clients and their needs. Our team balances the community’s vision, project goals, budgets, and potential construction impacts.

We take note of the details by conducting visual inspections, performing deflection testing, and coring with laboratory testing for R values. By utilizing a systematic approach, we can tailor pavement maintenance and rehabilitation solutions that can also lead to safer communities.

Our pavement engineers will evaluate your existing infrastructure and prioritize upgrades based on the necessity to meet the short-term or long-term vision for your community and neighborhoods to deliver the right pavement solution at the right time.

Today’s pavement rehabilitation strategies need to consider numerous facets, including:

  • Pavement Condition Index (PCI)
  • Pavement type, age, and full life cycle
  • Material properties and subgrade condition (R-Value, a measurement of compacted sample of soil/aggregate to a vertically applied pressure)
  • Utilities and conductors
  • Noise and environmental sensitivity
  • Accessibility, multimodal uses, and speed/traffic calming

While traditional slurry seals and reconstruction can be effective, we understand that it isn’t always the best solution. That’s why we explore alternative methods such as Mill and Fill, Full-Depth Reclamation (FDR) and Cold In-Place Recycling (CIR), to provide cost-effective and ecological solutions.

These options both save money and time and can also contribute to eco-friendly practices by reusing/recycling materials already on-site rather than exporting old material and importing new materials.

Our Program:  We implement our program through cataloguing conditions and presenting options.

Conduct Survey and Base Studies:

  • We delve deep into your pavement’s condition, conducting Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) testing and analysis.
  • Our cutting-edge technology, including 3D Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), allows us to assess pavement thicknesses, types, and buried utilities.
  • We conduct ADA inspections to ensure accessibility and complete streets’ compliance.
  • Our team creates a detailed base map, laying the foundation for complete streets’ options analysis.

Provide Complete Streets and Green Infrastructure Options:

  • We evaluate complete streets options and striping to provide better access across all modes of transportation (vehicle, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian).
  • We look at green infrastructure possibilities based on existing drainage and potential treatment areas.
  • We consider traffic volumes, parking considerations, and street geometry to determine the best options for a final street print.

Establish Rehabilitation Options:

  • BKF prioritizes repairs that offer the highest benefit, providing cost/benefit analyses.
  • We consider alternative pavement methods like Full-Depth Reclamation (FDR) and Cold In-Place Recycling (CIR). These options not only can save budget and time compared to traditional reconstruction; but are eco-friendly by reusing/recycling materials already on-site.
  • BKF develops project phases to optimize current and future CIP budgets.
  • Our focus extends beyond mere pavement repair to include curb ramp replacements, accessibility enhancements, pedestrian and bicycle improvements, and stormwater treatment.

Implement Solutions:

  • We prioritize implementing solutions by developing project specific plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) and working with agencies throughout the procurement and construction process.

At BKF, we’re not just about fixing roads; we’re about transforming communities. By prioritizing safety, sustainability, and inclusivity in each project, we focus on improving infrastructure while enhancing the quality of life for everyone who calls the community home. Partner with us to create streets that are more than just for traffic management, but vibrant, accessible, and sustainable spaces where people thrive.

Funding Strategies to Maximize Available Safety Features on Projects

BKF Grants and Funding team can identify additional monies that may allow for increased safety with improved signals, crossings, landscaping, and other important elements that often go unrealized during paving projects. Our grants and funding team can work with you to identify opportunities within your program.

Communication with your Community is Critical

With construction impacts and varying community concerns, communication is of the utmost importance to residents and visitors before, during, and after construction. BKF offers a full suite of public outreach services, including dedicated construction hotlines, translation services, presentations for public outreach/Council/BPAC meetings, website design and maintenance, and other digital media services. Take a look at the recently launched City of Marina Pavement Management website that the BKF Public Outreach team developed while working closely with the City.
