Surveying Project for Historic Sonoma Plaza Park won by BKF

BKF Engineers is proud to partner with the City of Sonoma to provide land surveying services for Plaza Park, a National Historic Landmark and one of California’s most treasured public spaces. Originally laid out by General Mariano Vallejo in 1835, the 8.5-acre Plaza remains the civic and cultural heart of Sonoma, home to the historic Sonoma City Hall, the Sonoma Valley Visitors Bureau, and a range of public amenities including an amphitheater, rose garden, duck pond, play areas, and mature trees.

To support the City’s development of a long-term master plan, our team will collect comprehensive surface and subsurface data, including existing utilities, walkways, vegetation, and structures. In response to known design challenges, BKF is incorporating enhanced surveying efforts in areas with observed drainage issues.

In recognition of the historic and civic value of this project, BKF will also perform a 3D laser scan of the exterior of Sonoma City Hall and the library. The data can be used for historical preservation or future virtual walkthroughs. Similar scans have been used in restoration projects of nationally significant landmarks, including Notre Dame Cathedral.

BKF is honored to help preserve and enhance this iconic public space and excited to contribute to the City of Sonoma’s vision for the future of Plaza Park.
