BKF Engineers is providing civil engineering and architectural services for the electrification and expansion of the Hearst Castle Bus Maintenance Facility, a key project under our ongoing on-call contract with the California Parks and Recreation Department. This renovation supports the transition to an electric bus fleet, enhances facility operations, and integrates sustainable energy solutions. The project includes a new PG&E electrical service to support expanded energy demands and the installation of EV charging infrastructure for buses and shuttle vehicles. A new electrical yard will house transformers, switchgear, and underground distribution infrastructure to power the facility’s charging system. To ensure reliability, the facility will incorporate backup power solutions, including up to five 500 kW natural gas generators within a screened enclosure. As part of the upgrade, existing CNG facilities will be decommissioned, and the modular office structure will be replaced with a permanent solution. The bus maintenance building will be remodeled and expanded to accommodate electric bus servicing, including an increased ceiling height for overhead lifts. Additional site improvements include utility upgrades, pavement rehabilitation, ADA-compliant access, and stormwater treatment measures. This project will provide Hearst Castle with a modernized, energy-resilient facility that aligns with California’s clean transportation goals and supports the long-term sustainability of the bus fleet.
