South Park San Francisco

BKF provided civil engineering services for South Park San Francisco Park Improvements, revitalizing the city’s oldest public park in the South of Market neighborhood. Originally designed as an English picturesque strolling park, South Park had fallen into disrepair over the years.

Working closely with the South Park Improvement Association, Fletcher Studio, local neighbors, and community leaders, BKF supported the redevelopment master plan and design execution. Improvements include a new ADA-compliant path of travel through the entire park despite a 20-foot fall across its 525-foot length, a new 335-foot storm line to resolve drainage challenges, bioretention gardens, a rainwater cistern for irrigation, and enhanced traffic calming measures with bulb-outs and chicanes. The revitalized park now features a meandering pathway, play areas, plazas, seat walls, sloping meadows, a stage, and flexible community gathering spaces — a contemporary interpretation of a classic picturesque park.
