BKF collaborated with the City of Albany and Caltrans to enhance bicycle and pedestrian facilities along San Pablo Avenue as part of the University Village Development. The project introduced a first‑of‑its‑kind separated, two‑way cycle track within Caltrans right‑of‑way, raised above the roadway and paired with a second raised sidewalk to create a tiered, multimodal corridor. This configuration improves safety by providing dedicated space for each travel mode and reducing conflicts between cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles.
The project also incorporated a Caltrans Class IV separated bikeway, a pedestrian and bicycle HAWK signal, upgraded bus stop accommodations, and full ADA‑compliant improvements. BKF supported the approval of non‑standard design features and coordinated required repairs to the box culvert at Codornices Creek. As the first design of its kind in Caltrans District 4, the project sets an important precedent for future separated bikeway and cycle‑track designs throughout the region.
