BKF worked closely with the City of Albany and Caltrans to enhance pedestrian and bicycle facilities as part of the University Village Development, specifically the frontage of the development along San Pablo Avenue near Monroe St and Dartmouth St. The project constructed a first of a kind in Caltrans right of way separated, two-way cycle track, raised from the roadway and another raised sidewalk adjacent to the cycle track, creating a unique tiered corridor for each mode of travel. This design aims to enhance safety by creating dedicated facilities and minimizing interaction between the different modes of travel. The project is the first of its kind within Caltrans District 4, which has set precedence to similar future designs as Caltrans formed its policy for separated bikeways/cycle tracks.
