County Office Building 3

County Office Building 3 is the new headquarters for San Mateo County employees in the heart of Redwood City, CA. The County is proud to feature the first Civic Building in the country featuring Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) construction and Net-Zero energy building design. The Mass Timber frame, wood columns, beams, and floor decks were a sustainable and aesthetic design choice that selected for structural and environmental benefits to lower the building’s carbon footprint. The inherent lightweight nature of the wood framing reduces the foundation size and performs exceptionally well under lateral seismic loads. The building design also includes 4 main traditional steel cores within the building which house 5 elevators, egress stairs, and provide the bulk of the lateral stability for the structure.

The building’s energy production comes from numerous PV arrays located on the building’s roof and on the adjacent parking garage. Automated roller shades and windows add to the building’s energy efficiency. The Net Zero design exemplifies the County’s commitment to sustainable energy and the building is on track to meet 2030 Energy goals and achieve LEED Platinum Certification.
BKF performed construction staking services including the staking of the foundation piles through the structural erection of the building. BKF also performed construction staking for the site improvements including utilities and hardscape features. The building construction presented a unique challenge from the tie-in of the wood design to the existing steel framing of the structure, which BKF was able to calculate measurements with accuracy where it was vital to preserve the integrity of the wood material.
