BKF provided civil engineering design services for the expansion of the Richmond Ferry Terminal, a project that enhances regional mobility by offering a reliable alternative to freeway congestion and other transit modes. The expansion required careful integration with several prominent waterfront features, including the adjacent Bay Trail, the Harbor Way terminus, a City‑commissioned public sculpture, and the Craneway Pavilion entertainment venue. BKF’s work supported a seamless connection between the terminal and these surrounding public amenities, improving passenger access and overall site functionality.
The project introduced a new fixed pier and passenger waiting area, along with an ADA‑compliant gangway and ramping system that ensures accessible movement between the shore and ferry boarding points. Improvements also included a new passenger loading float and the addition of a kayak launch facility, enhancing waterfront recreation while supporting multimodal connectivity. Together, these enhancements create a more efficient, accessible, and enjoyable experience for ferry passengers and waterfront users.
