Overview

BKF Engineers provided comprehensive civil engineering and land surveying services for the redevelopment of the Red Sea Lafayette Data Center in Santa Clara, California. This project involved the transformation of an existing facility to support new data center operations, requiring extensive site reconfiguration and infrastructure upgrades to meet the demands of high-performance computing. 

The redevelopment impacted approximately half of the site, with existing parking areas reconfigured to accommodate new mechanical systems and a large above-grade generator yard. BKF led the design and integration of critical infrastructure, including grading and drainage plans, utility layouts, and stormwater management strategies. Detailed construction documents were prepared to address site layout, utility routing, signing and striping, erosion control, and C.3 stormwater compliance. 

To support environmental and permitting requirements, BKF provided engineering assistance throughout the entitlement process, including the preparation of Schematic Design (SD), Design Development (DD), Construction Documents (CD), and Construction Administration (CA). Surveying and mapping services were also delivered, along with the creation of new easements to support proposed infrastructure improvements. 

Coordination with municipal agencies was a key component of the project’s success. BKF worked closely with City Planning and Engineering staff to navigate regulatory requirements and facilitate timely approvals. Our team’s proactive approach helped streamline communication between stakeholders, resolve technical challenges, and maintain project momentum. 

BKF also conducted circulation analysis for both pedestrian and vehicular access, ensuring safe and efficient site navigation. Sustainability was a core focus, with stormwater compliance assessments and erosion control measures integrated into the design to support long-term environmental performance. This project reflects BKF’s expertise in delivering technically complex, utility-intensive infrastructure for mission-critical data center environments, with a focus on precision, sustainability, and regulatory alignment.
