Overview

BKF provided civil engineering and surveying services for the new three‑story, 72,000‑square‑foot Critical Care Building at Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa. The facility connects to the existing hospital on all levels and expands capacity with 20 critical‑care beds, a new surgery department, central sterile processing, clinical lab and pathology services, while also upgrading essential building systems. Inspired by its iconic Napa Valley setting, the design incorporates natural light, views of therapeutic gardens, and evidence‑based design principles to support patient healing and staff well‑being.
BKF’s work included site grading and drainage design, horizontal and vertical utility coordination, and the implementation of low‑impact, landscape‑based stormwater filtration through bioswales, retention areas, and pervious surfaces to support LEED Gold certification. The team also provided full surveying services and assisted with entitlement approvals through local agencies and the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. Additionally, the design team utilized Building Information Modeling (BIM) throughout the design, approval and construction phases.
