The Main Street/Gateway Specific Plan will focus on facilitating redevelopment and reinvestment in three focus areas of the City to transform this important gateway into a vibrant destination that will complement and support the new Milpitas Transit Center. These include the historic Main Street with storefront retail and restaurants, the importance of Calaveras Blvd. as a primary gateway into central Milpitas, and the opportunities for new mixed-use commercial and office development along Abbott Avenue and the City’s valuable I-880 frontage. The City envisions an attractive
and economically vital district that accommodates a mixture of housing, shopping, employment, entertainment, and cultural and recreational activities organized within a system of landscaped boulevards, streets, and pedestrian/bicycle linkages.
BKF is supporting the City with redefining the Specific Plan boundaries, reviewing and expanding the capacity of the remaining underdeveloped areas, evaluating current and future infrastructure and open space needs, and identifying opportunities to activate and enhance the public realm at appropriate scales within each of the focus areas. The team is assisting City staff in the planning process to discover and evaluate enhancements to Midtown in a manner that beneficially expands the capacity of development, including ways to increase or redistribute density designations within Midtown and revise the Midtown boundaries where appropriate.
