Overview

The McLaren Bike Park in John McLaren Park is San Francisco’s first dedicated Bicycle Motocross (BMX) and mountain biking park. Designed by Alpine Bike Parks and opened in Fall 2017, the half‑acre facility serves riders from the Excelsior, Crocker‑Amazon, Portola, Visitacion Valley, Sunnydale, and surrounding Bay Area communities. The park was envisioned as a vibrant community space where youth and young adults can stay active, build skills, and enjoy an exciting recreational experience within a protected urban setting.

BKF provided civil engineering and surveying services for the project, working closely with Alpine Bike Parks to ensure a seamless layout and a safe, engaging experience for riders of all skill levels. The design incorporates a beginner skills trail, a youth‑focused BMX and mountain biking pump park, and solutions to address steep grading and drainage challenges. Long‑term maintenance and durability were integrated into the design, along with extensive coordination with multiple City agencies, including Recreation & Park, MTA, Public Works, Hydraulics, Accessibility, and Planning, to deliver a successful and sustainable community amenity.
