Overview

Building 453 in the Livermore Computing Complex (LCC B453) was designed for multiple generations of supercomputers, housing 285 offices, a visualization theater, a 150-seat auditorium, and several conference rooms. The 253,000-square-foot, four-story office tower was previously known as the TSF and earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification in 2010. The TSF is a 253,000-square-foot building that houses some of the world’s fastest supercomputers, including Dawn (BlueGene/P), BlueGene/L and ASC Purple — Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) systems largely dedicated to stockpile stewardship.

As part of the initial project phase, BKF performed a detailed topographic survey and matched existing campus site control to support the drainage evaluation and design development. The survey included the collection of horizontal and vertical control tied to established benchmarks and datum. BKF’s field and office team completed a detailed utility topographic map of existing surface features. Survey data captured spot elevations, utilities, drainage structures, building finished floor elevations, and perimeter entry conditions to accurately document existing site constraints.

Based on the survey findings and drainage calculations, BKF developed a civil engineering solution to improve infiltration performance and collection efficiency. The drainage upgrades provided additional infiltration capacity to the existing storm drainage collection system and eliminated stormwater ponding in and near the perimeter entries to the building. Improvements included regrading of localized areas, modification and/or replacement of drainage structures, and integration of enhanced infiltration components designed to meet regulatory requirements and improve long-term
system performance.

BKF prepared comprehensive construction documents to implement the design, including drainage calculations and utility plans, along with technical specifications. The established survey control was incorporated into the construction documents to facilitate future site contractor layout and ensure accurate implementation of grading and drainage improvements.
