In order to increase traffic operations and increase capacity, the City of Irvine required various additions as well as modifications to this intersection. These improvements included the addition of a 5th northbound through lane, new right turn pocket into an industrial complex in the northeast quadrant, and modifications to the existing eastbound left turn movements. The improvements included new right of way acquisitions, utility relocations, and traffic signal modifications (east side). During the development of the construction documents, BKF analyzed the construction staging and traffic handling concepts. We understood the need to both maintain the LOS of the intersection to the greatest extent possible, while providing the contractor with efficient yet concise work areas.
