Overview

BKF was selected by the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) and the City of San Ramon to provide construction management services during the project delivery of the Iron Horse Trail/Bollinger Canyon Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing, with CCTA serving as the implementing agency and the City as the project sponsor. The project constructed a bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Bollinger Canyon Road as part of the Iron Horse Trail.

The project improved safety for pedestrians and bicyclists using the Iron Horse Trail while also improving traffic flow on Bollinger Canyon Road. In addition, the overcrossing supports alternative transportation and expands recreational access throughout the San Ramon Valley. The Iron Horse Trail is a Route of Regional Significance and serves as a major bicycle and pedestrian corridor. Extending from Dublin to Martinez, the trail connects users to schools, City Hall, parks, transit, and commercial centers.

The cable-stayed overcrossing features main spans totaling 200 feet and a 70-foot-tall, V-shaped structural steel pylon. A concrete pile cap and two 72-inch-diameter CIDH piles, approximately 78 feet long, support the pylon. Structural steel forms the main and back spans, with precast concrete panels creating the bridge deck. Concrete V-piers support the back spans, with 48-inch-diameter CIDH piles extending approximately 40 feet below each pier. Concrete abutments on spread footings and mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls support the approaches.

Beyond the overcrossing, the project included utility protection and roadway realignment. Additional improvements included signing and striping, traffic signals, lighting, landscaping, and irrigation.

BKF provided pre-construction services, including coordination with CCTA, the City, the CM/GC contractor, and the design team on construction cost and contract documents. BKF also provided full construction management and administration services during construction and project closeout.
