BKF provided civil engineering design and coordinated closely with the project design team on the removal of the existing library and the construction of a new three‑story library and community learning center. The new 58,000‑square‑foot facility was designed to operate on 100 percent solar power and included comprehensive site and utility improvements across the adjacent 2.8‑acre Heritage Plaza and Civic Park.
As part of the project, BKF supported the integration of a 190,000‑gallon rainwater catchment cistern designed for non‑potable water use and irrigation reuse. The team also coordinated utility relocations with the City of Hayward, PG&E, AT&T, and additional utility agencies to ensure seamless service connections. Mapping and documentation were prepared to support parcel mergers and lot line adjustments required by the City and the U.S. Post Office, helping to facilitate the successful delivery of this modern civic campus. This project was awarded LEED platinum status in June 2023.
