The Claire Lilienthal Elementary School Campus project involved the demolition and removal of eight portable classroom buildings, which were replaced with a new 22,000‑square‑foot, two‑story permanent classroom and gymnasium facility. BKF provided civil engineering design and surveying services throughout the project.
The new building introduced additional single‑accommodation restrooms, improved circulation between new and existing classroom spaces, and expanded utility and storage areas. It also served as the first prototype zero net energy building for the San Francisco Unified School District. BKF’s civil design scope included new utility connections to serve the facility, site accessibility improvements, and integrated stormwater management strategies. In addition, BKF acted as the team lead in coordinating project approvals with both the City of San Francisco and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.
