Catalina Emergency Repair Fourth of July Cove

Overview

BKF supported the emergency grading and repair of the access roadway into Fourth of July Cove north of the isthmus of Catalina Island, California. The intense storms of the 2022-2023 storm season caused significant erosion of the access road leading to Fourth of July Cove and continuing to the north side of the island. The damage prohibited vehicular medical emergency access, or vehicular access of any other kind, to Fourth of July Cove as well as to Howland’s and Emerald Coves where organized camps were functioning. BKF applied for and obtained emergency permits for the roadway repairs from the US Army Corps of Engineers, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, The California Coastal Commission, and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. The repairs were completed, and the permits were closed by BKF in August of 2023.
