BKF participated in the master planning, design, and construction of a new 138-bed inpatient tower for the Kaiser Medical Center in Roseville, California. The supporting infrastructure for the tower includes an 803-stall parking structure, off-site improvements, and new and relocated site civil, mechanical, and electrical systems. The master planning also encompassed the relocation and sizing of underground utilities, vehicular circulation studies, and site space planning for future construction.
Along with HOK architects, McCarthy Building Company, and Kaiser Permanente, BKF engaged in a LEAN design process within an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) arrangement. Three different configurations for the bed tower were considered, and BKF prepared various layouts, grading plans, and stormwater management designs for each option. Project phasing was also considered to ensure the ongoing operations of the Medical Center and emergency department while maintaining patient experience standards. As part of this analysis, it was determined that the parking structure should be built before commencing the bed tower construction.
After the preferred configuration was selected, the IPD team continued to develop the comprehensive project design, working together in a co-located office under Kaiser’s direction. The design phase was largely completed in December 2022, with construction scheduled to begin in 2023 and expected to be completed in 2027. BKF will handle construction staking and will continue collaborating with the IPD team, providing support and construction administration services.
