BKF was contracted by a confidential corporate tech client to coordinate with Caltrans to advance the approval of a signature Frank Gehry–designed multi‑use bridge over California Route 84. The bridge will provide public access from the new tech campus to the Bay Trail, Bayfront Park, and the National Wildlife Refuge, connecting these destinations while minimizing environmental impacts. To protect the sensitive habitat within the Refuge, the alignment runs parallel to Bayfront Expressway and ties directly into the relocated Bay Trail. The design also includes two overlook platforms with educational placards offering views into the Refuge.
BKF’s work encompassed the development of a grade‑separated multi‑use bridge over Bayfront Expressway, extensive coordination with Caltrans District 4 and Caltrans PEER to secure the required encroachment permit, and the design of specialized foundations engineered to protect existing utilities in place. Additional responsibilities included the installation of a new traffic signal system spanning seven lanes of traffic, implementation of mitigation measures for the National Wildlife Refuge, navigation of CEQA and NEPA environmental clearance processes, and the use of BIM modeling to support design integration and project coordination.
