1700 Richard Avenue Data Center

Overview

BKF Engineers provided civil engineering and land surveying services to support the development of a new exterior equipment yard at an existing data center located at 1700 Richard Avenue in Santa Clara. Leveraging deep expertise in local permitting and development standards, BKF collaborated closely with the project team to deliver design and construction support aligned with City of Santa Clara requirements.

To initiate the project, BKF conducted a targeted field survey to capture critical spot elevations and surface features adjacent to the proposed equipment yard. This data was used to supplement existing CAD site plans and was enhanced through detailed utility research and mapping to ensure accuracy and completeness.

BKF prepared a full set of 20-scale civil improvement plans, including demolition, grading and drainage, utility layout, signing and striping, erosion control, and construction detail sheets. The grading and drainage design addressed overland flow and ADA accessibility, while utility plans covered sanitary sewer, storm drainage, water, and fire services. Stormwater compliance documentation was also developed to meet regulatory standards.

To support environmental performance, BKF developed C.3 stormwater treatment calculations and incorporated best management practices for both construction-phase and post-construction runoff control. These measures were integrated into the design to ensure long-term sustainability and compliance.

Throughout the entitlement and permitting process, BKF coordinated with the City of Santa Clara Public Works and utility departments, providing plan reviews, specifications, and cost estimates to support inspection fee calculations and regulatory approvals. During construction, BKF provided shop drawing reviews, site visits, and timely responses to RFIs. Our team also assisted the construction manager with change orders and field coordination to ensure smooth execution.

BKF worked in close collaboration with the architect, landscape consultant, MEP consultants, and joint trench/electrical teams to ensure seamless integration of civil elements with the overall site plan. This project highlights BKF’s ability to deliver precise, coordinated infrastructure solutions that support operational excellence and long-term site performance.
