With more than three decades of experience in the planning and design of water and wastewater infrastructure, Nancy Baker has built her career around one constant: a love for learning and growth. From her early days as one of few women in the field to her current role leading complex projects for BKF’s Water team, she’s guided by curiosity, resilience, and a genuine passion for the work that keeps California’s communities flowing.
Nancy’s expertise spans pipeline conveyance systems, pump and lift stations, and water wells, as well as large-scale infrastructure planning and design. She’s successfully led projects for clients including the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, Irvine Ranch Water
District, Santa Margarita Water District, and the City of Newport Beach—each one an opportunity to deliver resilient, sustainable solutions that improve daily life for thousands of residents.
“When I first started out in engineering, there were very few women engineers,” Nancy recalls. “I kept my focus on the work and how much I enjoyed what I was doing.”
Her hard work and dedication have carried her through every challenge. “Hard work and being responsive to clients’ needs” are the qualities she credits most for her success. And even after 30 years in the field, Nancy’s drive to learn hasn’t slowed down. “I’m inspired by always trying to improve my skills and knowledge,” she says. “Learning is infinite.”
At BKF, Nancy is focused on sharing her experience with the next generation. “My goal is to pass on as much of my knowledge on the engineering design of water and wastewater projects to the younger engineers starting out in their careers,” she explains. “The hope is to pass on how wonderful, challenging, exciting, and rewarding it is to be involved in the water industry.”
Within BKF, Nancy values the authenticity and drive of her teammates. “Working with authentic, enthusiastic, and hard-working coworkers,” is what she enjoys most about being part of the firm. Her colleagues describe her as a steady leader and thoughtful mentor who brings positivity and perspective to every project.
Outside of work, Nancy’s world is full of color, creativity, and connection. She’s an avid traveler and amateur photographer who loves capturing new places and moments behind the lens. A novice gardener and chef, she finds peace in her backyard and joy in sharing home-cooked meals with loved ones. A longtime member of her Bible study group, Nancy values the sense of community and grounding that faith brings to her life. And at the center of it all is family — she’s a proud sister, aunt, and great-aunt, always cheering on her loved ones just as her sister has cheered for her.
