From a young age, Brian Scott was drawn to construction and building. His interests were sparked by time spent working alongside his dad and family friends who were contractors. In high school, he took a job with a land surveying business, and that early exposure to the built environment perpetuated his path. After earning his engineering degree from UC Davis, Brian joined BKF and he’s been a key contributor to the company ever since.

“What inspires me most is the opportunity to design something and then see it come to life in construction,” says Brian. “There’s something incredibly satisfying about solving a problem and watching your solution take shape in the real world.”

That passion has driven him through challenges, which are most often the complexities of working with diverse teams, both inside and outside the company. “Collaboration isn’t always easy, but it’s something we deal with every day, and it’s rewarding when everyone comes together to achieve a goal.”

One of Brian’s most impactful and proudest professional moments was working on the Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island redevelopment, which is a large-scale, highly visible project with complex technical, logistical, and stakeholder demands. “It was a challenging project, but also one of the most rewarding. Seeing the transformation and knowing the role we played in it is something I’m really proud of.”

In his role as Principal and Local Office Lead for Redwood City, Brian’s days balance strategy and connection. He leads with an emphasis on team unity, whether that’s through coordinating project delivery, supporting managers, or organizing events that bring people together. His leadership style is rooted in trust and communication—checking in with his team regularly, creating opportunities for collaboration, and ensuring people feel supported in both their work and professional growth.

Mentorship is a cornerstone of Brian’s approach. Early in his career, guidance from seasoned leaders helped shape the way he thinks, leads, and solves problems. Today, he strives to pay that forward, investing time in developing younger engineers and helping them navigate both technical challenges and career milestones.

Outside the office, Brian’s life is just as full. He’s a devoted husband and dad, carving out time for family activities—whether that’s coaching or cheering from the sidelines, heading out on camping trips, or exploring the outdoors. Sports have been a lifelong passion, from playing softball to staying active in other ways that bring him a sense of community and balance. “It’s all about making time and being there,” he says.

For Brian, the culture at BKF is a big part of why he’s stayed and thrived. “It’s a really good group of people. We’ve built a family-type feeling here—a comfortable environment where people want to stay. You know your team has your back,” he says. That sense of belonging is something he works to reinforce every day, ensuring the Redwood City office remains a place where people feel connected, valued, and proud of the work they do.
