Alex Dunning joined BKF Engineers straight out of college in 2020, after graduating from Sacramento State with a degree in Civil Engineering. Growing up, Alex didn’t have a family background in engineering, but his strengths with math and science led him down that path in college. What really drew him in was how collaborative civil engineering is.
Alex’s journey into water resources started with an internship during college in the utility department for the City of Sacramento, which sparked his interest in water-related work. When he attended a career fair and met BKF’s team, the timing couldn’t have been better. BKF’s Water Resources Department was expanding, and it was the perfect opportunity for him to jump in.
One of Alex’s proudest moments at BKF was leading the Redwood City Flood Modeling Project for FM Global. He took charge of designing a large 2D model to analyze the impact of major storm events in the area. It was a challenging project, involving a lot of technical software and coordination with clients, and he’s proud of the work he put in.
For Alex, the best part of his day is collaborating with his team. Whether it’s brainstorming solutions or discussing engineering alternatives over the phone, he enjoys working alongside people who are just as passionate as he is. He also credits his success to his supportive managers and teammates at BKF, who’ve been instrumental in helping him grow as an engineer.
When he’s not working, Alex has a strong support system at home, led by his newlywed wife, as well as his family and close friends. Looking ahead, he’s inspired by the project managers he works with and hopes to follow in their footsteps in the years to come.
