At BKF Engineers, we are thrilled to announce our latest endeavor in transportation engineering: the El Monte Avenue Corridor Improvements in the City of Mountain View. Recognized as one of the top engineering firms in California, BKF Engineers has been selected to spearhead this pivotal project. Our mission is to enhance road safety and foster a more inclusive transportation framework along the El Monte Avenue corridor. This initiative, designed to address bicycle and pedestrian safety at nine key intersections, stretches from El Camino Real at Escuela Avenue to the city limits at Springer Road and Jay Street.
Comprehensive Safety Enhancements
Our project encompasses a wide range of safety enhancements aimed at reducing accident risks and promoting multi-modal transportation. These improvements include:
- High-visibility crosswalks: Ensuring pedestrians are clearly visible to drivers.
- Curb extensions and reduced curb radius: Slowing down turning vehicles and shortening pedestrian crossing distances.
- Advanced stop bars and pedestrian signal heads: Increasing pedestrian priority at intersections.
- Right-turn on red restrictions: Enhancing safety for crossing pedestrians.
- Class IV protected bikeways: Providing a physical barrier between vehicles and cyclists, enhancing safety for bicyclists.
In addition, we are incorporating green bike lane striping at conflict areas and green left-turn queue boxes, which will further enhance the visibility and safety of cyclists. The removal of slip lanes will reduce vehicle speeds and pedestrian exposure, contributing to a safer environment for all road users.
Community-Centric Design
A standout feature of this project is the creation of a new plaza at the former slip lane island at El Monte Avenue. This plaza will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area but also serve as a functional community space, fostering a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly environment. Integrating green street elements throughout the corridor reflects our commitment to environmentally conscious design and aligns with the City’s sustainability goals.
Collaborating for Success
BKF Engineers is proud to collaborate with Gates + Associates, who will provide landscape architectural services, and David J. Powers & Associates, offering environmental support. This collaboration underscores our dedication to delivering comprehensive and sustainable infrastructure solutions that benefit the community.
