BKF has been selected to support the City of Santa Rosa in delivering critical multi-modal transportation upgrades along Hearn Avenue. The project includes the development of a new Class I multi-use path (MUP) on the south side of the corridor, extending from the SMART rail crossing to Corby Avenue. This pathway will feature a 10-foot unimpeded width and separation from vehicle traffic through buffers or barriers. Signal optimization at the Hearn and Corby intersection, including bicycle detection, will be explored to improve safety and performance for pedestrians and cyclists.
To further enhance mobility, the City plans to implement a Class IIB Buffered Bike Lane on the north side of Hearn Avenue through restriping and realignment. Accessibility upgrades will be made at the Hearn Avenue and Dowd Drive intersection, including the replacement of non-compliant curb ramps and installation of new Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS). Pavement rehabilitation will address fatigue cracking and cross-slope correction through targeted grinding, removal of compromised sections, and a 3-inch overlay.
BKF’s approach includes thoughtful coordination with the ongoing Hearn Avenue Overcrossing project, utility relocation near 440 Hearn Avenue, and protection of existing street trees. Our team will work closely with the City and our project Arborist to minimize impacts to trees and incorporate mitigation measures such as root barriers and reinforced concrete sections. With support from Nor-Coast Utility Design, Inc., we will manage utility conflicts and ensure seamless integration of improvements across the corridor.
