BKF was selected by the County of Santa Barbara and the City of Santa Barbara to provide design engineering services during the design phase of two new roundabouts: one at the San Ysidro Road intersection and one at the Olive Mill Road intersection. Both roundabouts are located within State right of way and serve US 101 freeway ramps. BKF provided complete design of the San Ysidro Road roundabout and supported the team with utility coordination, 3D modeling, and pavement delineation and signage.
The project is related to the completion of the proposed improvements included in the US 101 HOV Widening and Rehabilitation project, which adds an additional lane in both directions of travel for high occupancy vehicles during peak hours.
The San Ysidro and Olive Mill Roundabout configurations enhance traffic operations and safety for motor vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians, while also serving as gateways to the surrounding communities.
The project spans multiple jurisdictions and rights of way, requiring Coastal Development Permits and significant community involvement. The team incorporated unique design features into the roundabouts to address stakeholder requirements.
