Overview

The Winchester Road Bridge, over Murrieta Creek, Phase 2C Project improvements required evaluation of the existing bridge due to planned channel modifications associated with the USACE Murrieta Creek Phase 2C Improvements.

As part of the project, the creek invert was lowered by approximately 10 feet to achieve the ultimate stream profile, potentially affecting stream loading on the bridge and the resulting pile capacity due to changes in soil overburden.

BKF provided structural design services and performed a comprehensive capacity evaluation of the existing bridge. The team evaluated structural and geotechnical capacity under multiple live load vehicles and stream forces for 100-, 200-, and 500-year channel events. Analyses included existing conditions, proposed conditions with the lowered stream profile, and a 7-foot scour scenario for a further reduced invert elevation.

BKF further evaluated bridge performance considering potential liquefaction and lateral spreading conditions. The team delivered an expedited and comprehensive analysis within two months to support USACE and the District in meeting bid and grant funding schedules. The load rating demonstrated that the proposed Murrieta Creek improvements reduce stream loading on the existing Winchester Road Bridge and improve overall foundation stability.
