Old Telegraph Road

Overview

Following heavy rainfall in February 2024, the Old Telegraph Road Bridge over Sespe Creek experienced damage to scour protection at Abutment 1, exposing supporting piles on this scour-critical structure. BKF provided civil and structural design services for emergency repair and restabilization.

The Old Telegraph Road Bridge is a four-span cast-in-place, post-tensioned concrete box girder, with each span measuring approximately 120 feet, 6 inches, for a total length of 482 feet. It is supported on integral pier walls and seat-type abutments founded on driven steel piles.

BKF performed an emergency inspection to assess the extent of damage and evaluate structural integrity. Based on the findings, the team developed recommendations for emergency revetment repairs to stabilize the exposed abutment and mitigate further scour risk. Interim load ratings were also prepared to allow for limited, posted single-lane use, along with a load rating for the repaired condition.
