BKF provided comprehensive civil engineering services for the 555 Bryant Street residential development in San Francisco, California. The project involved demolishing existing structures across seven parcels and constructing a new 16-story residential tower with approximately 485 units and one level of below-grade parking. With a building footprint of roughly 32,000 square feet, the development represented a significant contribution to the ongoing revitalization of the SoMa neighborhood.
As the civil engineer for the project, BKF oversaw all major site and infrastructure design elements. This included site grading, pavement design, and the layout of sidewalks, curbs, and gutters, as well as the development of storm drainage, wastewater, and water and fire water service systems. The team also reviewed boundary and topographic surveys prepared by others and completed on-site evaluations to identify existing conditions and potential constraints, ensuring that all engineering solutions aligned with the architectural vision and project goals. Throughout the schematic design and entitlement phases, BKF coordinated closely with the architect and multidisciplinary design team to support an efficient and collaborative planning process.
To advance the City of San Francisco’s Tentative Map process, BKF prepared all required preliminary engineering documents, including site, demolition, grading, drainage, utility, and stormwater control plans. The firm also supported the entitlement effort through the preparation of technical materials and participation in agency meetings. Together, these services helped establish the groundwork for 555 Bryant Street to be a successful and sustainable residential development in one of San Francisco’s most dynamic urban districts.
