510/520 Townsend cloud computation

Overview

BKF Engineers provided comprehensive civil engineering services for the development of the 510 Townsend project, a seven-story, 320,000-square-foot commercial office building located in San Francisco’s SoMa district. The building, now leased by a major tech company for its cloud computing division, features forward-thinking open space programming and a rooftop deck with panoramic views of Mission Bay.

BKF supported the transformation of the site redevelopment into a high-performance commercial office facility, integrating sustainable design strategies to meet City of San Francisco mandates for stormwater reduction within a combined sewer district.

Stormwater management and reuse integration were key components of this cloud computation center project. BKF designed and sized rainwater harvesting systems that collect runoff from the roof, store it within the building, and reuse it for irrigation and recycled plumbing. The system was carefully balanced to meet both the building’s reuse demands and available collection area, minimizing its footprint while achieving LEED compliance.

As part of the design coordination team, BKF worked closely with the project plumbing consultant, architect, landscape architect, and LEED consultant to ensure the rainwater reuse system met both environmental goals and regulatory requirements.

BKF provided essential support in site & utility design for the cloud computation center with site grading and drainage design for outdoor plazas and pedestrian areas, designed street frontage improvements, and coordinated utility services from public infrastructure to the building.
