Downtown Sunnyvale The Martin

Overview

BKF supported the Downtown Sunnyvale Cityline redevelopment, including The Martin residential development, a transformative project located in the heart of Downtown Sunnyvale, just a five-minute walk from the Sunnyvale Caltrain station. Designed to revitalize the area into an active, vibrant, and pedestrian-oriented neighborhood, CityLine Sunnyvale is part of a larger, transit-oriented initiative that includes adjacent office, residential, entertainment, and retail developments.

The Martin mixed-use project consists of two 12-story buildings featuring approximately 479 residential units above ground-level restaurants and retail spaces, along with two basement levels of residential parking. These buildings are centered around a privately owned, publicly accessible open space plaza that thoughtfully incorporates five existing heritage redwood trees preserved and integrated into the new design.

BKF provided the design of underground utilities, drainage systems, and private streets. Additionally, BKF coordinated closely with the broader project team, including the project architect, landscape architect, and plumbing, electrical, mechanical, structural, and geotechnical engineers, as well as the contractor, and collaborated with outside utility agencies such as PG&E and various departments of the City of Sunnyvale. In addition to supporting the team with design efforts, BKF also provided field surveying, construction staking and mapping services.

BKF’s engineering contributions ensured efficient site grading, utility coordination, and stormwater management, supporting the project’s sustainability goals. The new buildings offer sweeping views of the Santa Cruz Mountains and San Francisco Bay and will serve as iconic additions to the evolving Downtown Sunnyvale skyline.
