The Midcoast Multi-Modal Trail in El Granada, California, is a new, paved trail that runs along the east (inland) side of Highway 1 in unincorporated San Mateo County. The eight-foot-wide asphalt surface has two-foot-wide decomposed granite jogging paths on each side. As the prime consultant responsible for civil engineering, coordinating with the County and regulatory agencies, and leading the subconsultant team, BKF created the 3/4-mile-long trail to allow residents to safely commute by bicycle or foot between El Granada and the east side of Miramar. The trail gives residents a transportation alternative that reduces highway congestion and the associated carbon emissions and pollution. The project also included a new secondary trail connecting to El Granada Elementary School, providing a safe route to school for students in the area.
