Highway 85 – Improvements Highway 87 to I-280

BKF provided the civil engineering design for the widening of Highway 87 from a four-lane freeway to six-lanes and adding HOV bypasses at on-ramps in Santa Clara County. In concurrence with the widening improvements, BKF also provided civil engineering design for settlement repairs for Highway 87.

Project Unique Features:
- The majority of the freeway is on embankment fill except for the cut section at Communication Hill and approaching I-280 on the north end.
- To meet the restrictions due to grade difference, retaining walls were constructed at several on-ramps for HOV bypasses.
- Significant drainage improvement modifications were made to facilitate the pavement widening and associated settlement repairs.
